Aryan's experience fighting for local families and businesses both professionally as a lawyer and personally as a community advocate has shown him the system is failing the community. The data shows us residents have suffered from unfair taxes, poor infrastructure, and rising crime while the city focused on downtown projects and wasteful spending.

He is running to be a champion of change, who proposes concrete, data-backed solutions to Ward 5.

November 24, 2016 - Aryan Sadat Raises Awareness and Launches GoFundMe Campaign in Response to Teen's Tragic Death in Drunk Driver Collision

In late 2016, Shiraz Shermohammad, a young Afghan teen with dreams of becoming a Calgary police officer, was killed by a suspected drunk driver. Just days after his 19th birthday, Shiraz was in a car with his family when they were hit by a vehicle driven by a 28-year-old woman. Police believe speed and alcohol were factors in the crash. The tragedy left Shiraz's father and one of his sisters with serious injuries, unable to attend his funeral. The family was already facing significant hurdles, including their mother's recent surgery for thyroid cancer and the care required for their injured, autistic sister. "Honestly, the grieving process is so hard," said Shiraz's sister, Tanaz Shermohammad, adding that the family was also struggling financially.

In the wake of the tragedy, family friend Aryan Sadat took action, launching a GoFundMe campaign to help the Shermohammad family. Sadat's campaign highlighted the devastating impact of drunk driving and called on fellow Albertans to help. "Friends, tragedies like this can be avoided in the future," he wrote on the fundraising page. "We need to show the impact drunk driving has on the lives of innocent people." The community responded with overwhelming support, and the GoFundMe campaign quickly surpassed its initial goal of $8,000, providing much-needed financial relief to the grieving family.

My plans for
Ward 5 Calgary

Homeowners

Freeze Property Taxes

Ward 5 homeowners have faced 7.2% higher property tax increases than the city average since 2021 (City of Calgary 2023 Assessment Data), while 23% of small businesses in NE Calgary now pay over $10,000 annually in city fees and taxes (CFIB 2024 Report). Meanwhile, the city operating budget grew $587 million (14%) since 2020, even as road maintenance budgets were cut (City Financial Statements).

We demand an immediate 2-year property tax freeze for primary residences, reform of the unfair assessment model, a comprehensive audit of all city departments targeting waste (including the $6 million art budget exposed by CBC Calgary in 2023), and a cap on business tax increases at the inflation rate.

Public Safety Crisis Response

Ward 5 has suffered a 12% increase in property crime (2023 CPS Annual Report) with police response times for Priority 2 calls now 42% longer than in 2019 (Calgary Police Commission Data). Shockingly, only 3 community patrol officers cover all of NE Calgary (City Council Minutes, February 2024). Our plan funds 4 additional CPS beat officers for Ward 5, installs 50 new CCTV cameras in high-crime areas like Marlborough Mall and Temple Drive, expands DOAP Team coverage to 7 days a week, and implements mandatory minimum fines for repeat vandalism offenders.

Fix our Roads & Infrustr

With 39% of Ward 5 roads rated "poor" or "very poor" (City Infrastructure Report 2023) and our ward ranking third in the city for pothole complaints (311 Service Data 2022-24), we propose a Pothole Repair Guarantee with 48-hour response for Priority 1 reports. Our accelerated 3-year paving plan focuses on key routes including 52 Avenue NE in Monterey Park, 32 Street NE in Marlborough, and Ogden Road SE, while creating a dedicated sidewalk repair fund for seniors' routes to transit, addressing the 17% of sidewalks that remain non-ADA compliant (City Accessibility Audit 2023).

Community Advocacy Updates

July 20, 2025 - Aryan Sadat, Calgary Lawyer and Community Advocate Speaks at the Rally for an Autistic Child Failed by our Education System, Injured at School

"On Sunday, I attended a protest for a non-verbal autistic child who was abused at school. A heartbreaking failure of a system meant to protect vulnerable children.

I offered my support to the family and will continue to stand by them as they seek answers, justice, and accountability. No family should ever have to go through this -- and no child should suffer in silence."

December 2, 2024 - Calgary, Aryan Sadat Supports Family of Khalid Farooq: A Tragic Loss While Helping a Stranded Driver

In a heartbreaking turn of events on November 27, 2024, Calgary lost a beloved husband, father, and friend, Khalid Farooq, in a tragic accident. Khalid, the sole provider for his wife and five young children, was a pillar of his family and a beacon of generosity in his community. His final moments were a testament to his character: he was selflessly helping a stranded driver on the side of the road, with his 10-year-old son in the car, when the accident occurred. His dedication to helping others, a passion that defined his life, ultimately cost him his own.

As Khalid’s family navigated this unimaginable grief, they were also faced with significant financial uncertainty. To help ease their burden, Aryan Sadat launched a GoFundMe campaign with the family’s consent. The fundraiser aimed to provide for Khalid’s wife, Freba Sayed Ahmad, and their five children, ages 2 to 14. Sadat called on Calgarians to show the same compassion and kindness that Khalid so freely shared with others. The community responded with overwhelming support, and the GoFundMe campaign raised a remarkable $234,892, providing much-needed financial relief to the grieving family.
